What's wrong with Cate?

Cate Blanchett appeared gaunt and haggard at the 2007 Fashion Institute Gala at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday. In fact, is that really her or is it Skeletor? What's so crazy about these pictures is that Cate's usual ethereal, supernatural beauty is so consistent. She always looks beautiful - on every red carpet, in every candid shot, in every film role. I have never seen her look less than gorgeous, so what's going on? Cate looks skinny and unwell. Her hair appears thinner than usual. Since we know she's far too sensible a woman to abuse her own health, my only conclusion is that she is ill. Oh no! But what's wrong with her? Maybe it's just the makeup. What do you think?

I love this story. Because I love Guy Pearce and his ability to physically transform himself and completely disappear inside a role (witness Priscilla Queen of the Desert, L.A. Confidential, Memento, A Slipping Down Life, The Proposition, ETC). So he lost more weight to play Andy Warhol than Sienna Miller did to play Edie Sedgwick in Factory Girl. And he teased her about it, calling her "Fatty Edie". Hee hee. It's funny because even without losing the weight the director supposedly wanted her to, she's already naturally tiny.

Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton will be camp counselors for the fifth season (What? Has it really been going on that long?) of their reality show The Simple Life. AND for one week they will be counseling overweight kids. Those poor kids. How the heck are these drive-thru eating, cellulite-sporting skinny mean girls going to help kids at fat camp?!?

Lindsay Lohan drinks kombucha

Lindsay Lohan is out of rehab and appears to be taking care of her health by drinking kombucha, a fermented tea that has been used for centuries in Asia and Russia for its miraculous health benefits. The tea is brewed with a bacterial culture to produce a tangy, carbonated beverage which tastes a bit like vinegary wine. The drink is chock full of vitamins, acids and enzymes and the list of kombucha's reported benefits is huge, ranging from liver detoxification to restoring hair color to curing cancer and diabetes. Most importantly, kombucha is said to help accelerate weight loss and curb cravings for alcohol. So it's the perfect drink for Lindsay! She's drinking GT Dave's Original Organic Raw Kombucha (I know because I've got bottles of it in the fridge myself) and seems to take it with her everywhere.

Oh yeah, I also read somewhere that kombucha is supposed to cure cellulite. Now that WOULD be a miracle.

Star talks about all the weight Katie Holmes has lost recently, and The Skinny Website has the full story scanned. Katie looked great before she got pregnant with Tom Cruise's alien spawn. Now she doesn't look like herself. Or maybe she's just not actually herself anymore. I mean, has anyone heard her speak recently? She sounds like a member of the Manson family or something (as in, brain-washed).

As I reported back in November, Elizabeth Hurley followed a strict "traditional foods" diet in preparation for her lavish wedding this past week. She followed a paleolithic diet, eating only meat, eggs, vegetables and fruit, and avoiding "modern" foods, those that have only been eaten by humans post-Stone Age, like dairy, refined sugar and grains. So, I'm not really sure that she had any weight to lose, but WHATEVER. A bride's gotta do what a bride's gotta do.

Luckily, this woman is absolutely beautiful and very talented and has a good head on her shoulders, so she's over all that. Sharon Osbourne will have surgery to remove the gastric band from her stomach. She had the band put in place ten years ago to aid her in losing 100 pounds but the band has reached the end of its lifespan and needs to be removed. Sharon, who has suffered from bulimia in the past, admits that she will need to see a therapist to help her avoid falling back into disordered eating habits.

Apparently he will do "anything it takes" to get her in shape, including making her exercise non-stop while babysitters care for their daughter Suri. Supposedly Katie is now weight lifting, which she was "unable to do while pregnant." Huh? Why? Unless there are complications that contraindicate it, pregnant women can lift weights. I mean, haven't you seen Heidi Klum hauling her clan around on her hip while pregnant with her third child?

Kate' Bosworth's obsession with being thin may have started after she lost weight to play a drug addict in the 2003 film Wonderland. It's not uncommon for an eating disorder to be triggered by an initial weight loss, either intentional or due to illness, which gains the individual attention and compliments. Then this though gets stuck in her head: "if they think I look good now, I must have looked bad before, and I might look better if I lose more weight!" A slippery, slippery slope.

When is this not their cover story, and how many times have they printed that picture of Nicole running on the beach? The article features the usual suspects: Nicole Richie, Kate Bosworth, Victoria Beckham and Keira Knightley (who I still say is not anorexic) along with former anorexic Portia de Rossi, and two actresses whose weight you don't hear about everyday: Christine Taylor (wife of Ben Stiller) and Kim Raver. Fashion insiders are quoted as saying there is a "huge drug scene" in the modeling industry, with young women popping horse tranquilizers and other prescription medications in attempt to kill their appetite, keep their energy, and stay slim. When will it end? These women need to feed themselves and be healthy.

The rumor is out there that Nicole Richie is being given crystal meth by her stylist Rachel Zoe to help her stay skinny. Eek. But if this is true, it means Nicole is not lying about not having an eating disorder. She's just using illegal drugs instead! Last week she was seen leaving the West Hollywood Recovery Center, a treatment facility specializing in 12-Step programs. Supposedly she was there on a Wednesday when the crystal meth meeting is held. Of course, she could have been there for any number of addictions: heroin, alcohol, cigarettes, gigantic sunglasses, etc.

Maybe she should just eat a balanced breakfast and go to the gym. I think we'd all be happier.

Drew Barrymore is "skinny fat"

Drew Barrymore (she's the one on the right) was recently photographed in Mexico looking, well, soft and squishy. In the latest Elle magazine she talks about how losing 20 lbs has made her "more confident." Don't get me wrong. I think Drew is totally cute but maybe - and I'm just saying maybe - this confidence is premature. It looks like she lost all her weight in muscle and didn't do anything to preserve it, hence the sagging, flabby figure that remains. Or maybe she's just "retaining water" from too many margaritas and tortilla chips.
