Cate Blanchett appeared gaunt and haggard at the 2007 Fashion Institute Gala at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday. In fact, is that really her or is it Skeletor? What's so crazy about these pictures is that Cate's usual ethereal, supernatural beauty is so consistent. She always looks beautiful - on every red carpet, in every candid shot, in every film role. I have never seen her look less than gorgeous, so what's going on? Cate looks skinny and unwell. Her hair appears thinner than usual. Since we know she's far too sensible a woman to abuse her own health, my only conclusion is that she is ill. Oh no! But what's wrong with her? Maybe it's just the makeup. What do you think?

Nicole Richie was spotted leaving the DeOrio Wellness Medical Center in L.A. on Friday. No confirmation on what her business was there, but we do know that Dr. DeOrio is a "dietary health" author and considered an expert in helping people with weight issues of all kinds. I'm happy to learn that Nicole may be seeking professional help but concerned that she is getting quality help. According to TMZ, Dr. DeOrio advocates drinking half a gallon of fruit juice a day. Now I know fruit juice contains vitamins, but drinking half a gallon a day is ... questionable. Fruit in juice form contains no fiber and is digested by one's body as sugar. Those calories could be better spent on more nutrient-rich food containing protein, minerals, fiber or essential fatty acids (EFA).
Forget the sugary juice. Nicole just needs a sammich or three. Big ones. Every few hours.

Either way, we know she's not getting any antidepressants, although perhaps her baby daddy Tom Cruise's recent apology to Brooke Shields for his criticism of her use of antidepressants to treat post-partum depression means he has new sympathy for mothers in such situations. I'm glad you sent her to the spa, Tom, because she clearly needs it, but she really looks like she needs ... well, she really needs to be released from the grips of your freaky alien cult and go back to living a normal life.
