Olivia Newton-John has an anorexic daughter

Chloelattanzi

I didn't know Oliva Newton-John had a daughter, but Chloe Lattanzi is 21 and has gone public about her struggle with anorexia. Chloe and her mother talked to Woman's Day magazine about getting over her denial, and the role parents play in a child's eating disorder. It's great that she's working through her issues and all, but when I read this, all I could think of was that I'm glad Olivia didn't name her daughter Chloe Newton-John-Lattanzi.

Britney's bulimic

Britneysoda

Ding ding ding ding ding. Here we go. To add to the list of addictions - alcohol, cocaine, fast food, gross men, bad wigs and having babies - it's been revealed that Britney has an eating disorder, specifically bulimia. And she's suffered from it since she was sixteen. OK, at this point I just want to road trip my way out to California and talk my way into Promises, Britney's rehab center, just to give her a big hug. No wonder she's losing her mind. Bulimia, drug addiction, bad marriage, 2 children in less than two years. It's enough to make a girl shave her head. Dealing with an eating disorder, especially a physically damaging one that involves a large amount of shame such as bulimia, can be devastating to one's psyche. I'm glad she's admitted her problem and is in the best environment she can be to get help at this point. Just think, we might even see a clean and healthy Britney someday. Now, one with taste and common sense, that's another story ...

Kate Winslet chooses cheese over laxatives

Katewinslet

As a young actress, Kate Winslet struggled with body issues and once used laxatives in an attempt to lose weight. Luckily, this woman is absolutely beautiful and very talented and has a good head on her shoulders, so she's over all that. She knows enough to know she doesn't need to obsess over being perfectly thin. And she claims to eat ploughman's lunches everyday now, which makes me jealous. Yum.

Luisel Ramos's sister Eliana dies

Elianaluiselramos

Luisel Ramos (above right), the young model from Uruguay whose death from apparent anorexia fueled the recent hubbub over size 0 models, had a sister. Eliana Ramos (above left), just 18 years old, was also a model, may also have been anorexic, and has also died of heart failure. Did she starve herself to death or did the sisters have a "genetic problem", as Pancho Dotto of the Argentine agency Dotto Models claims? Either way, these deaths are terribly tragic.

Nicole Richie denies surgery

Nicolemcdonalds_1_1

Nicole Richie has hit out against a Page Six rumor that she had a gastric bypass procedure reversed during her short stay in "rehab" recently by posting a message on her My Space page saying that the rumor is "pathetic" and a "shame" and that "anyone that knows anything about this surgery would know that legally, you must be AT LEAST 100 pounds overweight to even have the surgery done."

Nicole Richie gets treatment for weight issue

Nicolerichie_rehab

Nicole Richie is undergoing "diagnostic treatment" to determine why she can't put on weight. Hmmmm ... what the heck could be wrong with her? This doesn't sound like new news to me, actually. Hasn't she already talked about doing this? Seriously though, I'm glad she's getting help, even if she still claims to be completely clueless as to why she isn't gaining weight. That's the part that seems the most far-fetched to me. If it were me, and I could honestly rule out my own behavior as being the cause (you know, behavior like starving, purging, taking illegal diet pills, doing illegal drugs, over-exercising, etc.), I would be scouring the internet and talking to as many people as I could about what could be wrong. I guess some people just aren't as interested in educating themselves about their own health as others. Does she even know how many calories she should be eating every day? Is she going to claim ignorance when someone finally tells her? "Oh, I didn't know I needed more than 300 calories a day to survive. See? I didn't have an eating disorder, I was just unimformed!" Perhaps this is the start of a campaign to save face after all those "I don't have an eating disorder" claims.

In any case, the doctors will figure it out, as long as Nicole is actually truthful with them.

Kate and Nicole's slippery slopes

Nicole_black Katebosworth_grey

Kate Bosworth and Nicole Richie's extreme aversions to food is driving away their men and their careers. Poor Brody Jenner, Nicole's most recent ex, says she didn't treat him like a "friend or a boyfriend" and he was constantly trying to get her to eat more. It's been reported that Kate's recent breakup from Orlando Bloom may have stemmed from her refusal to eat, and both women's careers may be in jeopardy. Kate's next projects have been put "on hold" and acting offers for Nicole are drying up. Because people go to the movies to see beautiful people, not sick people. This is still so sad. Why can't anyone help them?

Oh, and I hear Rachel Zoe, stylist to the stars, can get you some.*

*Disclaimer: This is a humorous post and by no means do I condone the use of dangerous or illegal drugs for weight loss. If you are considering taking any kind of "weight loss" drug I strongly urge you to speak to your doctor instead.

Kate Bosworth's a perfectionist

Katebosworth_1

Kate' Bosworth's obsession with being thin may have started after she lost weight to play a drug addict in the 2003 film Wonderland. It's not uncommon for an eating disorder to be triggered by an initial weight loss, either intentional or due to illness, which gains the individual attention and compliments. Then this though gets stuck in her head: "if they think I look good now, I must have looked bad before, and I might look better if I lose more weight!" A slippery, slippery slope.

It's official: Kate's weight crisis! [Star]

Celebrities still "too thin"

Faded Youth has scans of People magazine's latest cover story about "too thin" celebrities and models. When is this not their cover story, and how many times have they printed that picture of Nicole running on the beach? The article features the usual suspects: Nicole Richie, Kate Bosworth, Victoria Beckham and Keira Knightley (who I still say is not anorexic) along with former anorexic Portia de Rossi, and two actresses whose weight you don't hear about everyday: Christine Taylor (wife of Ben Stiller) and Kim Raver. Fashion insiders are quoted as saying there is a "huge drug scene" in the modeling industry, with young women popping horse tranquilizers and other prescription medications in attempt to kill their appetite, keep their energy, and stay slim. When will it end? These women need to feed themselves and be healthy.

Nicole Richie's weight loss drug of choice

Nicolerichie_meth

The rumor is out there that Nicole Richie is being given crystal meth by her stylist Rachel Zoe to help her stay skinny. Eek. But if this is true, it means Nicole is not lying about not having an eating disorder. She's just using illegal drugs instead! Last week she was seen leaving the West Hollywood Recovery Center, a treatment facility specializing in 12-Step programs. Supposedly she was there on a Wednesday when the crystal meth meeting is held. Of course, she could have been there for any number of addictions: heroin, alcohol, cigarettes, gigantic sunglasses, etc.

Maybe she should just eat a balanced breakfast and go to the gym. I think we'd all be happier.

Nicole Richie does NOT have an eating disorder

Nicolerichie_2 Nicole Richie is 100% NOT anorexic. At least that's what she told Tyra Banks on her show on Tuesday. We posted a link to some video from that show earlier, and now that it's aired, there are more choice quotes from the super-skinny "personality". Asked if she is anorexic, she replies: "Absolutely not. One-hundred percent not. I am not anorexic. I am not bulimic. I do not have a eating disorder." However, she does explain that she has hired a nutritionist and is seeing a therapist on a weekly basis. The nutritionist is to help Nicole try to put on weight, although she says she thinks she looks OK most of the time. She claims she is "naturally skinny" and lost the weight because of stress.

Stress? What stress?????????????????????????????????????????????????

Besides the paparazzi following you around, which you could avoid by leaving LA or living a lower-profile life, WHAT STRESS ARE YOU UNDER, NICOLE?

What constant, chronic, overwhelming stress can you be suffering from if you spend all day running around with your boyfriend eating ice cream and renting videos? Oh, unless you mean existential ANGST, not stress. As in, you are plagued by the feeling that your existence is meaningless and your life has no purpose ...

OK, sorry. I got a little carried away there. Anyway, I heard yoga and stuff is good for stress. Buy yourself some scented candles and go run around on the beach some more. And most of all, relax. Then maybe you'll gain some weight.

Nicole Richie might be getting help

Nicolerichiemedicalcenter_3 Nicole Richie was spotted leaving the DeOrio Wellness Medical Center in L.A. on Friday. No confirmation on what her business was there, but we do know that Dr. DeOrio is a "dietary health" author and considered an expert in helping people with weight issues of all kinds. I'm happy to learn that Nicole may be seeking professional help but concerned that she is getting quality help. According to TMZ, Dr. DeOrio advocates drinking half a gallon of fruit juice a day. Now I know fruit juice contains vitamins, but drinking half a gallon a day is ... questionable. Fruit in juice form contains no fiber and is digested by one's body as sugar. Those calories could be better spent on more nutrient-rich food containing protein, minerals, fiber or essential fatty acids (EFA).

Forget the sugary juice. Nicole just needs a sammich or three. Big ones. Every few hours.

Petra Nemcova's eating disorder?

Petranemcova

Petra Nemcova's recent appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards has sparked rumors that the model may be bulimic. The reason for this speculation is that some believe her face looks swollen, especially in the cheeks. Swollen cheeks due to enlarged salivary glands are a classic symptom of the eating disorder bulimia. Other possible causes for a puffy, swollen face are gaining weight and having it all show in your face, or taking steroids for conditions such as inflammatory or autoimmune conditions.

Or maybe she's just allergic to James Blunt. What do you think? Keep in mind, Petra has admitted to laxative abuse in the past.

Nicole is not anorexic, says Lionel

Nicolerichieeating Lionel Richie says he took his daughter Nicole to a doctor because he was concerned about her dramatic weight loss and the doctor told him she is not anorexic. Instead, Lionel claims that Nicole's weight loss is stress-related, citing his divorce from Nicole's mother and the constant media attention Nicole receives, particularly about her weight, as stressors. Now wait a minute, that sounds suspiciously like classic denial/displacement to me. Lionel feels guilty about Nicole's problem so he blames himself (and his divorce) and then goes on to blame the media scrutiny. But the media scrutiny is ABOUT her weight, it didn't cause her to LOSE the weight in the first place.

I'm sorry, I'm just really beginning to have trouble with this. If Nicole is sick, why can't the doctors figure out what is wrong? If she is a smack addict, or has a tape worm, or some other condition, why is she prancing around like nothing is wrong, asking to be left alone? And why isn't she at least talking about what she is doing to try to get better, as she eluded to in her conversation with Tyra Banks? Doesn't she realize that the more she pretends nothing is wrong the more crazy the media will get about it? Maybe she's just trapped in the Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes Dilemma. Try to maintain some privacy about certain aspects of your life and have the speculation get so out of control that you lose your chance to deal with it calmly and reasonably. At that point you have to go and do something like publish a 22-page spread in Vanity Fair just to sort it all out.

I can see it now. "Nicole: I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome". The magazines would fly off the racks, and she would get herself on the cover of Vanity Fair! That doesn't really seem so bad now, does it Nicole?

Nicole Richie isn't anorexic [The Superficial]

September 07, 2006

Poor little Nicole Richie

Nicole Richie tries to make us feel sorry for her on "The Tyra Banks Show", talking about how horrible the public scrutiny of her weight problem is, and how it isn't fair to be picked on for being too thin because people don't go around and "call people fat" and "point at them and laugh at them." Um, I'm sorry Nicole, but what planet are you living on? And what the heck are you talking about? Of course fat people are made fun of.

Nicole goes on to make a stink about the paparazzi following her around and photographing her eating outside. And here I was thinking her job description was "celebrity personality" and she in fact makes her LIVING off of being photographed a lot. Seriously though, if she is genuinely trying to do something about whatever her health issue is, perhaps she should think about leaving L.A. for awhile, going somewhere where she can get help and focusing on getting better, instead of just complaining. Watch the video here.

Eating disorders and body hatred

Madonna_purple_1 A survey by Top Sante magazine found that a significant percentage of women hate their bodies and resort to inappropriate tactics to try to control their weight and the aging process. Women over 40 on average wish they weighed 30 lbs less and rate their bodies a 3.5 out of 10. Many of these women have disordered eating habits, take pills or laxatives and envy older women, such as celebrities, with "good bodies". A good number of them also turn to plastic surgery, with the number of facelifts and other operations rising in the past 2 years.

Keira Knightley is not anorexic

Keira_smr1_1 Keira_smr2_1

Here is Keira at the London premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. Yes, she looks anorexic, but anyone who's been paying attention should know she's not.

She is a naturally skinny girl, claims to never exercise, and recently admitted to enjoying plates of pasta and red wine for dinner. Just as I was going to post this, stories started appearing about Keira "denying she's anorexic." after these pictures were publicized. No, she's not anorexic. Her body type gives her a very small and lean upper body, with a flat chest, thin arms and slim torso. That's nothing new. At the premiere of the original Pirates of the Carribean, she was also flaunting her skinny torso in a cropped top and super low-rise jeans (see below).

Let's look at further evidence that this girl has always been skinny enough to show her rib cage:

Anorexics admire Victoria Beckham

Vb_sm2 With all the pictures out there of Skeletal Spice, it's no surprise that the "pro-ana" community is talking about her. According to the Daily Mail, anorexia sufferers cite the former pop star as a major inspiration, the celebrity they would most like to look like. A poster on one website recently wrote: "I envy her thin legs and chest. She has beautiful bones sticking out of her chest."

While it's long been the case that eating disorders in young woman are fueled by media images of impossibly thin and beautiful models, actresses, and singers, the recent flurry of photographs of Victoria Beckham at the World Cup must have been particularly impactful. There she is, a beautiful woman married to a gorgeous athlete, with money and fame and three children to make her happy.

On top of all that, she has managed to attain the body so many of us want, and she was flaunting it - wearing the shortest shorts and tightest tank tops as she made her way to and from the games in Germany. To an anorexic, this is the picture of success, a picture obsessively collected and cataloged as the "ideal".

Katherine battled bulimia for five years and it was the Idol competition that motivated her to seek therapy. Realizing that throwing up seven times a day was damaging her vocal chords, she sought help from an intensive treatment program at the Eating Disorder Center of California.

McPhee describes how the pressure of growing up in Los Angeles affected her body image, and how food became an emotional crutch for her. Katecrop Kate Beckinsale wishes she "had had a sensible magazine article ... from someone who was actually intelligent" when she was struggling with an eating disorder as a teen. She apparently recovered with the help of therapy and says she decided to talk openly about it because "I was one of the few people I knew who had that problem who didn't remain a freak about it." Kate goes on to say that getting over an eating disorder is "really more about fixing up your life instead of eating or not eating." New-found respect for Kate!

Laraba
